Is Jalen Hurts Second In This Year’s Reese’s Senior Bowl?
Although he finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy to Oklahoma in 2019, Hurts came into the 2020 Senior Bowl with the third-day draft grade. The practice player among quarterbacks in the South during his time in Mobile, Hurts ended up going to the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
In his third NFL season, Hurts is a finalist for the AP NFL Most Valuable Player Award and will be under center when the Eagles play the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII on February 12.

None of the quarterbacks discussing the 2023 first-round pick with draft pundits will be playing in the Senior Bowl on Saturday. Some didn’t deserve to be invited. And national-championship quarterback, Stetson Bennett of Georgia, declined to play, even though he was not widely considered a candidate for the first three rounds of the draft.
The Senior Bowl assembled a quarterback set of Shepherd’s Tyson Bagant, TCU’s Max Dugan and Houston’s Clayton Tunn for the American team and Louisville’s Malik Cunningham, Fresno State’s Jake Hanner and BYU’s Jaren Hall for the national team.
In assessing this year’s QB group, Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy said, “We’re not going to take a first-round quarterback.” “I think it could be seven straight years with a first-round quarterback. But we’re really excited about this year’s quarterback class. Based on our Senior Bowl grades and when we see our grades around the league in November, -sharing calls, this class is in that 4th-5th round group where Jalen Hurts was just three years ago, and now it’s great to see beautiful Jalen in the Super Bowl. And Jalen went second that year , so I think there are going to be one or two players who will enter on day two. …
“I think some of these guys will move on, and it will be fun to see which ones do what.”
Tun said he was not aware of his draft estimates.
“Don’t really worry about it,” Tun said. โWorry about what I can do and how I can do my best. It’s a job interview, so I’m trying to make the best impression on the teams and preparing like I’m playing a game. Learning the offense, executing in practice and then interviewing well, so I’m focusing on what I can control.
A former Alabama prep star at Park Crossing, Cunningham said he thought all quarterbacks were working to prove something this week.
Cunningham said, “You just have to put your head down and get to work.” “I don’t really worry about all the stocks and things like that because at the end of the day you still have to go in, from first pick to last pick, and prove yourself and show that you belong .
“I think everyone understands that, and we all have a chip on our shoulder. It doesn’t matter where you are picked from. What matters is how you survive and thrive as a player.” How do you grow?”

2022 statistics for Senior Bowl quarterbacks include:
Bagant completed 400 of 572 passes for 4,580 yards with 41 touchdowns and eight interceptions and ran for 71 yards and five touchdowns on 79 carries.
Cunningham completed 136 of 218 passes for 1,518 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions and ran for 560 yards and 12 touchdowns on 113 carries.
Duggan completed 267 of 419 passes for 3,698 yards with 32 touchdowns and eight interceptions and ran for 423 yards and nine touchdowns on 137 carries.
Heiner completed 252 of 350 passes for 2,896 yards with 20 touchdowns and three interceptions and was minus-123 yards on 46 carries and two touchdowns.
Hall completed 248 of 376 passes for 3,171 yards with 31 touchdowns and six interceptions and ran for 350 yards and three touchdowns on 86 carries. He also caught two passes for 28 yards and a touchdown.
Tune completed 334 of 496 passes for 4,074 yards with 40 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and ran for 544 yards and five touchdowns on 128 carries.
Duggan said the quarterback had to make adjustments during Senior Bowl practice.
“I think just being able to show all that knowledge about football,” Duggan said of what he hopes to convey to NFL scouts this week. “Obviously, the Senior Bowl is a little different than the NFL college. You’re in the rush, which a lot of (college) teams don’t really do. You’re going to have some long play calls, going to lead a bunch of men. Things like that โ just run a whole operation that’s a little different from the college playing style, and I think I’m excited to be a part of it. Learn it, grow it and get into it.
Only one of last year’s six Senior Bowl quarterbacks was drafted before pick No. 74 โ Pitt’s Kenny Pickett, who went No. 20 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. But only Nevada’s Carson Strong didn’t start at least one NFL regular-season game on the list of pro signal-callers in 2022, along with North Carolina’s Sam Howell, Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder, Liberty’s Malik Willis and Western Kentucky’s Bailey Jappe. With Pickett debuting as a rookie.
This week marks the seventh quarterback in the Senior Bowl. Hendon Hooker of Tennessee has been attached to the U.S. team, even though he won’t play in Saturday’s game. On November 19, while playing against South Carolina, Hooker tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Nagy noted that the Senior Bowl typically does not allow players to participate in the off-the-field activities of the All-Star Game if they cannot participate in on-the-field work. But he made an exception for Hooker.
“The interview and the meeting-room time is so important to a quarterback,” Nagy said, “Hendon is that person and that seasonโhe was the face of college football for a good portion of the season.” โฆ He deserves this opportunity.โ
When Hooker’s 2022 season ended, he had completed 229 of 329 passes for 3,135 yards with 27 touchdowns and two interceptions and had run for 430 yards and five touchdowns on 104 carries in 11 games.
