Report: Pedestrian deaths are on the rise across America

Pedestrians in America are at increasing risk of being hit by a vehicle.

according to a new report from Governor’s Highway Safety AssociationDrivers hit and killed 3,434 people in the first half of 2022. This is an increase of 5% compared to the same period in 2021.

The Governors Highway Safety Association said, “This deeply troubling projection in pedestrian deaths in 2021 follows a 40-year high and continues a gruesome decade-long trend of more people dying while walking on American roads. ”

The national average shows 1.04 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 people. In Florida and New Mexico, the states with the highest rates of pedestrian fatalities, the figure is above 1.90. The report states that only two states, Kansas and NevadaA two-year decline was observed in pedestrian deaths.

The Governors Highway Safety Association states that there are several contributing factors that are leading to more deaths on US roadways. These include an increase in dangerous driving habits, heavy vehicles and inadequate infrastructure, such as footpaths, crosswalks and lighting.

โ€œThe only way to reverse this terrible trend is to do more of everything โ€“ more and better designed infrastructure to keep people walking safely, more uniform enforcement of traffic safety laws to prevent dangerous driving, and more communities Inclusion is where the effects of this crisis are felt hardest,” said Jonathan Adkins, chief executive of the GHSA.

The Department for Transport says that in addition to the growing number of pedestrians, 76,000 pedestrians are injured in road accidents every year.
