2 killed in car fire at light post on Hawaiian Islands

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Two people are dead after an accident in South Kohala on Sunday, February 5, according to Big Island Police.

Police responded to a call at approximately 3:25 p.m. and determined that a gray 2014 Jeep Cherokee was traveling north on Queen Kaahumanu Highway with three men inside.

According to police, the car then veered off the road and crashed into a large metal traffic light post.

The car caught fire and two people were trapped inside the car.

Both men were taken to Kona Community Hospital where they were later pronounced dead at 8:07 a.m.

The third passenger in the car, a 27-year-old, managed to escape.

He was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital in stable condition.

This is the fourth and fifth road accident this year as compared to seven last year.
