Westfield Athenaeum hosts ‘exciting’ West Springfield artist exhibit, reception

WEST SPRINGFIELD — For Christine Hartman, there’s nothing better than squeezing out a blob of intense, lovely oil paint or picking up a vibrant stick of pastel. The materials she uses to create her art are for her the least intellectual and most sensual part of the work.

“It’s really amazing to eat,” said Hartman, who has been called one of the most “exciting” artists currently working in western Massachusetts. Some of his works will be on display at the Westfield Athenaeum beginning Wednesday through March 25. Visitors can meet her at an artists’ reception on Thursday, February 2, 6-8 p.m. at the Athenaeum, 6 Elm St., Westfield. The reception is free and open to the public.
