USCG, allies tracking Russian vessel off the coast of Hawaii

HONOLULU (KHON2) – In recent weeks, crews have continued to monitor a Russian vessel off the coast of Hawaii, according to the USCG.

The USCG believes it to be an intelligence gathering ship and they are keeping a close eye on it.

While foreign military vessels may transit through the US economic exclusive zone as they please, in accordance with customary international law, foreign-flagged military vessels have been observed moving and operating within the Coast Guard District 14 area of โ€‹โ€‹response.

The Coast Guard is coordinating with Department of Defense partners in providing updated information on the movements and activities of any foreign vessels.

“The US Coast Guard is currently monitoring the Russian vessel operating in the vicinity of Hawaii,” said Cmdr. Dave Milne, Head of Foreign Affairs. โ€œAs part of our daily operations, we track all vessels in the Pacific through surface and air assets and joint agency capabilities.
The Coast Guard operates in accordance with the international laws of the sea to ensure that all countries can do so without fear or competition. This is especially important to secure freedom of movement and navigation in the Blue Pacific.
