Suspect kills 10 in Los Angeles mass shooting near Lunar New Year Fest

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (AP) — A gunman killed 10 people and wounded 10 others after a Lunar New Year celebration at a Los Angeles area ballroom dance club. month.

Captain Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said Sunday that the injured were taken to hospitals and their conditions ranged from stable to serious. He said 10 people died at the scene in the city of Monterey Park.

The mayor said people were “running away screaming” when officers arrived at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. He said officers then went to the ballroom and found the victims being treated by firefighters.

The mayor gave no details of the male suspect or the weapon he used, or why police did not provide any information about the shooting for hours, while the shooter was apparently on the run. He also said police were investigating another incident in the nearby city of Alhambra, where a similar business, the Lai Lai Ballroom, had police tape on its front door and an officer was guarding it. Detectives could be seen working near the open rear door, where a gloved woman was carefully examining the door handle as if checking a print. Authorities did not provide any details about what happened and it was unclear whether the incident investigators were probing to see if there was any connection to the Monterey Park shooting.

The mayor said it was too early in the investigation to know whether the gunman knew anyone in the ballroom or if it was a hate crime.

“We’ll look at every angle,” the mayor said.

The shooting took place in the center of Monterey Park where red lanterns decorated the streets for the Lunar New Year celebration. A police car was parked near a large banner that read: “Happy Year of the Rabbit!”
