An indigenous tribe donated $100,000 to a fund set up for victims killed and injured in the Monterey Park mass shooting.
The Pechanga Band of Indians, a Southern California tribe, made a generous contribution a gofundme page Founded by a team of community-based organizations including several AAPI groups.
Pachanga Tribal Chairman Mark Macaro said the Monterey Park community welcomed the tribe several years ago to join them in their Lunar New Year celebration.
“Pechanga has made great friends and acquaintances through Monterey Park’s Lunar New Year Festival,” he said in a statement. “Like all of California, we are deeply saddened by this tragedy and extend our deepest condolences and support to the victims.”
The gift smashed a goal set by organizers for the victims’ fund of a total of $807,154 raised as of Wednesday afternoon.
The goal was then reduced to $900,000 as donations continued to pour in.
Organizers said that 100% of the donations received would go “to those who are now suffering from this senseless violence.”
