Massachusetts weather: Wintry mix of rain, snow possible late in the week

Massachusetts residents could see drier, milder weather — with a few scattered showers late Tuesday — before a chilly mix of rain and snow arrives, forecasters said.

On Thursday, a weather system could bring “a chilly mix of cold and rain” before transitioning to snow accumulation in parts of the state. national weather service Meteorologists said.

After the weather remains dry till Wednesday night, the situation is likely to worsen on Thursday. The weather service said rain and sleet are likely over the higher reaches of Massachusetts and along the borders of Vermont and New Hampshire. It may rain in low altitude areas.

For this reason, Thursday evening traffic could be slow if the roads are left untreated.

A mix of rain and chill could turn into a few inches of freezing snow over much of Massachusetts late Thursday. But the weather service cautioned that the forecast for late week was still uncertain.

After a dry Saturday with high temperatures in the 30s, more precipitation is expected on Sunday. The weather service said the forecast would clear up as the weekend approaches.

Before that Tuesday will be mainly dry. But in the afternoon it can become cloudy, which can cause scattered rain. The weather service said high temperatures across the state will be in the mid to upper-40s.
