Late Grant Wahl to receive US Soccer’s Colin Jose Media Award

FRISCO, Texas (AP) – The late Grant Wahl will be honored with this year’s Colin Joss Media Award, which is given to reporters who have made long-term contributions to soccer in the United States.

Wahl died at the age of 49 on 10 December in Lusail, Qatar after a fall while covering the World Cup quarter-final between Argentina and the Netherlands.

The hall said on Wednesday that Wahl will be honored at the US National Soccer Hall of Fame induction on May 6 in Frisco, Texas. Landon Donovan, Damarcus Beasley, Lauren Cheney Holliday, Kate Sobrero Markgraf, former US Women’s coach Jill Ellis and Steve Zungul will be inducted into the Hall.

Wahl worked for Sports Illustrated from 1996 to 2021, covering football and college basketball, then started his website. He also worked for Fox and CBS, and wrote the books “The Beckham Experiment” about Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy and “Masters of Modern Soccer” about England star David Beckham.

An autopsy by the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Wahl had died of an aortic aneurysm.

The award, which was first given in 2004, is named after the Hall’s historian emeritus.
