Detroit protesters ‘disappointed’ after Tyra Nichols video released

DETROIT (WXYZ) – Despite the weather, more than a dozen people came out for the Spirit of Detroit at the same time as the video release of Tyr Nichols’ arrest in Memphis, Tennessee.

They held up signs and spoke out against the brutality seen in the video.

As protesters gathered in Memphis, a group of Detroiters who spoke out against the beating of Nichols by Memphis police stood in the snow in solidarity.

Sammy Lewis with the Detroit Communist Party USA said, “Kidney failure and cardiac arrest, that’s how badly these officers beat him.”

Nichols’s family shared this photo of him, which shows how badly he was beaten. The 29-year-old spent three days in hospital before dying.

“We are tired of people dying in our communities by a system that is supposed to protect us,” Lewis said.

Detroiters like Lewis have been active in the streets since the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery in 2020, marching through the streets of Detroit and demanding change.

“We don’t want to see this anymore and we’re not going to stand here in silence because silence is complicity,” Lewis said.

Many of those gathered at The Spirit of Detroit said they haven’t seen the video yet, and Lewis says she doesn’t plan to.

“We don’t need to see bodycam footage to know what happened because we have the history,” Lewis said.

The five officers involved in the beating have been fired and now face multiple charges, including second-degree murder. But despite his arrest, Lewis and others say systemic change is needed.

โ€œThe fact that this is happening over and over again is painful. It’s devastating, it makes me angry. I feel disappointed, but I am still optimistic to continue the struggle.
