Baldwin formally charged in ‘Rust’ shooting death

Alec Baldwin was formally charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter Tuesday in connection with the shooting death of cinematographer Halina Hutchins.

She was killed on the set of “Rust”, which was being filmed near Santa Fe, New Mexico, in October 2021.

The film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reid, who was in charge of making sure the gun was not loaded with real bullets, was also charged with involuntary manslaughter.

The charges are fourth degree felonies. The district attorney said they are each punishable by up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Baldwin claimed that he was told that the gun was safe. He also said in a TV interview that he did not pull the trigger when the gun went off. He claimed that he only hit with a hammer.

Baldwin’s attorney earlier this month called the decision to charge his client a “miscarriage of justice.”

“Mr. Baldwin had no reason to believe that there was a live bullet in the gun – or anywhere on the set of the film. He relied on the professionals he worked with, who assured him that the gun was There are no live bullets. We will fight them.” charges, and we will win,” said attorney Luke Nicks.

Gutierrez-Reid’s attorney said he would also fight the charges.

Attorney Jason Bowles said, “She did not commit involuntary manslaughter. These allegations are the result of a grossly flawed investigation and a complete misunderstanding of the facts.” “We intend to bring the full truth to light and are confident that Hanna will be exonerated of wrongdoing by a jury.”

Hutchins’ family, however, supports the allegations, saying their “independent investigation” finds they are warranted.

“It is a comfort to the family that, in New Mexico, no one is above the law. We support the allegations, will cooperate fully with this prosecution, and hope that the justice system will do its best to protect the public.” and will hold accountable those who break the law,” attorney Brian J. Panish said.

Director Joel Souza is not facing any charges related to the shooting. He got injured in the incident.
