AHSAA Bowling: Spain Park, Alberta boys top seed on first day of state tournament

Defending Class 6A/7A state champion Spain Park fielded three bowlers among the top eight medal winners Thursday at The Alley Bowling Center in Gadsden as the Jaguars finished the first day of traditional bowling with 2,940 pins. Ethan Lee rolled into the traditional three-game series contest with a total score of 212-199-204 – 615 to top the series and wake up coach Stephen Hobbs’ Jaguars.

Spain Park enters Friday’s championship tournament best-of-7 Baker format championship bracket tournament as the No. 1 seed in the Big-School Division. The Sparkmans, who won the North regional championship last week, rolled a team series of 2,805 to earn the No. 2 seed in Friday’s championship round.

Alberta defeated Marbury by four pins in the Class 1A/5A boys competition on Thursday morning and is the top seed in the 1A-5A championship round on Friday. Coach Daniel Dunleavy’s Warriors finished the traditional round with 2,537 pins. Marbury, trained by Jimmy Lansdale, totaled 2,533 pins.

The AHSAA Girls’ Class 6A/7A and 1A/5A Traditional Bowling Series got underway Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore John Devery Thomas led Alberta on Thursday with a 187-201-159 – 547 series, which placed third overall. Marbury senior Justin Cauthen led the Bulldogs’ effort with a 179-199-188 – 566 series to finish second in the medal race behind defending 1A/5A individual medalist champion Fisher Fuller of Satsuma. The Gators senior shot 200-164-213 – 577 to finish first among eight medalists in the series.

Dalton Suther of Southside-Gadsden rolled a 210 to lead the first game in Class 1A/5A. Corner’s Max Hill led game two with a round of 213, and Fuller rolled a 213 to lead the third round.

The Spain Park bowlers got strong efforts from Michael Kimble, Liam Hilson and Luke Eaton. Kimble’s 606 series was second best behind Lee, Hilson was fifth with a 586 series, and Eaton was eighth with a 578 total. Anthony Passarelli of Spanish Fort entered the top game of the day with a score of 256 in the second game of the 6A/7A tournament. Cy Anton of Hartselle had the second best game with a 244 in the same round. Heath Eshleman of Vestavia Hills had the top round in the game with a 232 total and Zachary Swaim of Sparkman had the best game of the third round with a 235.

First-round pairings in Friday’s Class 6A/7A championship bracket, which begin at 9 a.m. ET, include American Christian vs. Spain Park, Hartsell vs. Hewitt-Trussville, Spanish Forte vs. Vestavia Hills and Auburn vs. Sparkman. The 1A/5A championship bracket also begins at 9 a.m., with Alberta facing West Point, Beauregard vs. Southside-Gadsden, Satsuma vs. Etawah and Corner vs. Marbury.

The final, which is scheduled for approximately 10:30 AM ET, will be broadcast live on the AHSAA TV network of cable stations and also streamed live on the NFHS Network’s subscriber-based platforms. The girls’ championship is scheduled for Friday afternoon at approximately 3:30 p.m. and will also be televised and live streamed.
