Strong storms have damaged vendor tents at a Mesa holiday market

MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — A festive Mesa market was hit hard by rain and hail on Thursday, damaging vendors’ tents and goods for sale.

About 100 vendors set up at Sugarplums Market near Ray and Sossaman roads. When the storm hit, tents and even a cash register were blown away, sending money into the air.

“The hail, the high wind gusts … there’s a lot of tents that actually fell, there were tents that were going away, tents that were crushed,” said Meagan Bredsguard, a seller at Cozy’s Blankets. “A lot of people lost inventory.”

Buyers helped vendors hold up their tents, and brought bags of salt to help keep them in place. “This is their livelihood … small businesses that build their business from the ground up,” Bredsguard said.

The market has been closed all day after the storms. But despite the damage, Sugarplums Market will be open Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Click here for more information about the market.
