“We are committed to transforming Argentina’s energy. We have developed a custom solution for the HELIOS Clean Energy Project that generates 100% clean energy from industrial organic waste. It is unique in the province of Córdoba because the solutions we use allow us to minimize our environmental impact.”, confirms Diego Gonzalez, Director of Business Development at Aggreko.
Is it The first project with complete thermal cogeneration (CHP) from the region, which operates through a system that recovers heat from the exhaust gases and engine jacket water. This project sets an important precedent in Latin America for being a pioneer in total energy renewal.
Therefore, the project and solutions are divided into two parts:
- Electricity delivery: 2.4 megawatts to the interconnected electricity network
- Thermal Power Delivery (Cogeneration System):
Capacity 2488 MW [Megavatios térmicos]
Capacity per Aggreko equipment 1,244 MW
Technical details of the power generation and heat cogeneration procedure HELIOS
cogeneration system Aggreko It makes use of the heat of the water from the engine (jacket water) and the heat of the exhaust gases of the composite engine generators, to heat the water from the customer’s bio-digester circuit.
Aggreko It provides hot water for the pasteurization of the organic substrate before entering the biodegradable materials and for the maintenance of the substrates used in biogas production.
With site conditions, a total yield (electricity generation + heat generation) greater than 80% is available.
Circular Economy with a Triple Effect
The project was established seven years ago with the aim of making the least impact on the environment and the lowest possible carbon footprint from the poultry factory, and to give a circular economic destination to the organic industrial waste it produces. Today, the plant feeds waste from Polos San Mateo, compost from Avicula Rio Ceballos, waste from Refinería del Centro and waste from La Superior refrigerator, while waiting for new contracts to close.
“The idea that inspires us and that we are convinced of is that nothing is lost, everything changes“, confirms Matteo Legato, President of Helios Clean Energy. In agreement with Helios to provide 2.4 megawatt-hours of biogas, the conversion of organic waste into clean and efficient energy minimizes environmental impact. This highlights the presentation of sustainable alternatives that produce Aggreko To meet the needs of its customers and to promote the economic, social and environmental development of the communities.
The factory does not produce any kind of waste: it turns everything into a resource. The system uses the organic matter produced by the poultry factory to generate biogas that feeds the generators Aggreko, while providing energy to supply the electrical system. At the same time, the waste heat from the generator that heats the water is reused for the gas generation process. In other words, the generators produce heat that is reused to keep the biodegraders at the desired temperature, in order to avoid additional costs in consuming diesel in the customer’s boiler.
Later, at the end of the decomposition process in which biogas is produced, a liquid stream is obtained from the biodegraders that are reused to irrigate the natural property of the plant and the adjacent field, where they also grow corn which is subsequently converted into food. for poultry.
Without a doubt, this HELIOS project represents an exemplary case for Argentina and the rest of Latin America in terms of a circular economy and its commitment to the energy transition through clean energy production.
