These conflicts have the potential to redefine the balance on the international scene. They are often defined as a clash between democracies and authoritarian regimes.
The richest man in the world considers himself a global CEO.
For him, it is necessary to fill the current leadership void created by divorce between people and politicians around the world. Musk, who promised to change civilization as it is today, is a respected figure the world over.
His straightforward, sexy style appeals to older generations and Generation Z alike. The billionaire has managed to establish a close relationship with millions of people around the world via social networks that he is quite masters of.
So it is not surprising that he meddles in geopolitical affairs because he feels he has a responsibility to do something.
Taiwan and the new Hong Kong?
Tesla’s CEO recently said, “I’m doing my best! The billionaire has already offered an unwanted peace plan to end the conflict between Moscow and Kiev since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. This plan, submitted on October 3, stipulates that the Ukrainians cede two of their regions – Crimea and Donbass – that they annexed and occupied. by the Russians.
Nor should Ukraine seek to become a member of the European Union and NATO.
The plan was widely rejected by Ukrainian authorities and Twitter users, who asked Musk to vote.
Despite this strong rejection, the tech mogul continues to search for solutions to prevent the conflict from turning into a nuclear war.
Unfazed by his failures on the Ukraine question, he had just proposed a plan to resolve tensions between China and Taiwan.
“My recommendation… is that we define a special administrative region for Taiwan that is reasonably acceptable, and probably won’t make everyone happy,” Musk just told the Financial Times. “And it’s possible, and I think it’s probable, in fact, that they could have a more lenient arrangement than Hong Kong.”
Basically, the billionaire believes that Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, should have some control over the island. Taiwan is currently an independent government.
Musk makes China happy
Musk’s comments come at a time of tension between the United States and China over Taiwan’s sovereignty. President Joe Biden has warned China that the United States will defend Taiwan militarily in the event of an armed conflict.
On September 28, a US Senate committee passed a bill called the “Taiwan Policy Act of 2022.” The text provides for a significant increase in US military aid to Taiwan as well as a major revision of Washington’s approach to this highly sensitive issue, the first since 1979.
The current policy, adopted in 1979, intentionally leaves it unclear what the United States would do in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan. At the same time, it carefully refrains from recognizing any Chinese sovereignty over the island.
Relations between Washington and Beijing became even more tense with the visit of Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House of Representatives, to Taiwan last August. This visit provoked a backlash from China, which almost immediately organized naval air maneuvers around the island on a scale not seen since 1945.
These tensions have the background to the upcoming CPC Congress which, from October 16, will see Xi Jinping re-elected for a third term.
Unsurprisingly, China welcomed Musk’s proposal to make Taiwan a special administrative region similar to Hong Kong.
“I would like to thank @elonmusk for his call for peace across the Taiwan Strait and his idea of โโcreating a special administrative region for Taiwan,” Chen Gang, China’s ambassador to the United States, said on Twitter on October 9. One country, two systems are our basic principles for resolving the Taiwan question.”
Taiwan says no
“It is the best approach to achieve national reunification. Provided that China’s sovereignty, security and development interests are guaranteed, Taiwan after reunification will enjoy a high degree of autonomy as a special administrative region and a wide area for development,” he added.
“The rights and interests of the people of Taiwan will be fully protected, and both sides of the Taiwan Strait will share in the glory of national renewal. The peaceful reunification of China is conducive to peace and development in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large.”
Taiwan, for its part, rejected the billionaire’s offer.
Qiu Chui-cheng, deputy minister for Taiwan’s mainland affairs, told Bloomberg that the island would not accept the proposal, which is “based on investment interests to transform a democratic state into a private administration.”
Washington has yet to officially respond to Musk’s proposal.
China is a key region for Tesla as it seeks to dominate the global electric vehicle market. The company has a factory in Shanghai that is significant to the global ambitions of the electric car maker.
Its temporary shutdown in March and April due to COVID-19 certainly hurt Tesla’s production and delivery.
