Japan bans the transfer of chemical weapons-related goods to Russia due to its concerns about nuclear threats

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan has decided to ban the export of chemical weapons-related goods to Russia in an additional penalty against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine, as Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said it was “deeply concerned” about the potential use of nuclear weapons. He said on Monday.

Japan has also added 21 Russian organizations such as science laboratories as the target of the current export ban, according to a government statement released after Monday’s cabinet meeting, which formally approved the new sanctions measures announced by the foreign minister at last week’s G7 meeting.

“Japan is deeply concerned about the possibility of using nuclear weapons during the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Matsuno said at a media briefing, adding that Japan will continue to work with the international community in supporting Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Russia.
