‘Dahmer’ is Netflix’s biggest debut since Season 4 of ‘Stranger Things’

While Dahmer has been #1 on Netflix for a while now, we finally have some context on just how well the serial killer drama will be on the service. Technically, the show is called “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” but the brand sticks the word “Dahmer” on top of it all, so I’ll point it out.

As it turns out, Dahmer is Netflix’s biggest show since the fourth season of Stranger Things, according to new self-reported Netflix data. The show garnered 196.2 million watch hours in the first part of its first week, from September 21 to September 25. And that’s only secondary to Netflix’s other beast, Stranger Things, as season four arrived with 301.3 million hours from June 27 to July 3. The show continued to rival Squid’s overall seasonal numbers, although it ended up falling short.

There have been plenty of other number one shows on Netflix since the fourth season of Stranger Things. The Sandman, Never Have I Ever, Echoes, Cobra Kai, Resident Evil, and others. But none of them have reached as much viewership as Dahmer here, and the show will likely continue to be one of Netflix’s biggest success stories of the year.

Unlike other shows, Dahmer’s performance doesn’t mean much to a potential second season, as the project is a miniseries, and the story is clearly over at the end. But it boosts the fortunes of producer Ryan Murphy, who continues to prove his worth to Netflix, and star Evan Peters, who will undoubtedly submit to Best Actor in a Limited Series Emmy Time, although we’ll see if he can. Win.

It’s still strange to discuss Dahmer’s success in the wake of the real issue touching on the show itself, the idea that people make money from Dahmer’s crimes, whether that’s the Dahmer family themselves (his father wrote a book) or third parties (an example of someone making Dahmer comic books is brought up). While I wouldn’t claim this series ever glorifies Jeffrey Dahmer, and does a good job of spending the time focusing on his victims and the police folly that led to him not being arrested for so long, I do think about what that means to Billions. Dollar megacorp Netflix is โ€‹โ€‹one of his most successful shows of the year. I’ve just researched if Netflix announced any kind of donation to the families of Dahmer’s victims or anything in the aftermath of the series, and all I came up with is a Change.org petition asking them to do exactly that.

But it’s the audience’s fascination with serial killers that makes shows like such huge hits. Obviously, we’ve had many, many series and movies based on real-life killers before. Mindhunters, one of the best Netflix series, is about a number of real-life killers, but it did not receive a similar response.

We’ll see how long Dahmer can stay ahead. With these numbers, it may take a while for something to come up to remove it.
