CDPR wanted to cut the best character for Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Trigger said no

While CDPR deserves a lot of credit that Cyberpunk Edgerunners, the new Netflix anime, is so good that they built Night City and wrote the script, they made a pretty huge mistake.

If you’ve watched the series, you’ll probably agree with the feeling that one of the best, if not the best, characters is Rebecca, the little-handed, gorilla-and-goblin member of the gang. But CDPR classified her as something else, Lolly, and didn’t want her on the crew as a result. The trigger, however, was pushed back.

At a recent Twitch event, CDPR explained what happened:

“She’s the best girl, but I feel a little guilty for saying that because I was one of the people on the creative team voting for Rebecca was already outside of the original cast during pre-production. CD Projekt Red first got a character design for Rebecca and they were like ‘She’s a loli. Lolis’ is It’s in Night City. It just doesn’t fit the Cyberpunk 2077 aesthetic.”

Trigger response as per developer: “No, loli should stay.”

This entire exchange sparked a bit of controversy among Cyberpunk fans, due to the extent to which the term “loli” is loaded into the anime, which refers to an underage character who may be sexual at times. The debate is about whether or not Rebecca is loli, as the quote from Trigger is used, not how they actually rated it, most likely.

Some say Rebecca is not a minor and simply a petite woman designed with a petite frame. However, I remember a segment in Edgerunners where Rebecca was denied entry to an Afterlife pub, likely because she’s too young, although if the legal drinking age in Night City in 2077 is still 21, it might be 18-20. Later there is a time jump for what I suppose is at least a year or two, so it will be bigger. Regarding the character being sexualized, there is one clip early on where Rebecca appears in lingerie (although in this scene she is threatening, not seducing the main character), but she is never naked like the other women on the show, Kiwi And Lucy.

However, the end result worked, with CDPR even agreeing that Rebecca is the “best girl” and they’re happy to have her included in the series, as the character who probably resonated the most with fans. The problem, of course, is that (Spoilers, spoilers, spoilers), like most actors, Rebecca did not survive the events of the series, as she was crushed to death by Adam Smasher who jumped from an Arasaka tower chasing David, shortly before David killed himself. There is a particularly harrowing moment where we see Rebecca smashed with her mind on the floor, but I’ve heard some desperate fans hope that she can be “reassembled” for season 2. I… doubt it.

In short, listen to Trigger. They know what they’re doing.
